आश्विन अमावास्येचे दिवशीं प्रातःकाली अभ्यंगस्नान, प्रदोष काली दीपदान, लक्ष्मीपूजन इत्यादि सांगितली आहेत. सूर्योदयाला व्यापून पून्हा सूर्यास्तानंतर एक घटिकेपेक्षां अधिक रात्रीची व्याप्ति असेल तर संदेह नाहीं. या दिवशीं प्रातःकाली अभ्यंगस्नान, देवपूजा वगैरे करून अपरान्ह काली पार्वण श्राद्ध करावें. प्रदोषसमयीं दीपदान, उल्काप्रदर्शन व लक्ष्मीपूजन हीं करून नंतर भोजन करावें. या अमावास्येचे दिवशीं बाल, वृद्ध इत्यादिकावांचून इतरांनी दिवसास भोजन करूं नये. रात्री भोजन करावें असें विशेष वचन आहे. केवल दुसऱ्या दिवशीं अथवा दोन दिवस प्रदोषव्याप्ति असेल तर दुसऱ्या दिवसाचीच घ्यावी. पूर्वदिवशींच प्रदोषव्याप्ति असेल तर लक्ष्मीपूजनादिकाला पूर्व दिवसाचीच व अभ्यंगस्नान इत्यादिकाविषयीं दुसऱ्या दिवसाचीच घ्यावी. दोन्ही दिवस प्रदोषव्याप्त नसेल तरी असाच निर्णय जाणावा. पुरुषार्थचिंतामणीमध्यें, पूर्व दिवशींच प्रदोषव्याप्ति असेल व दुसर्‍या दिवशीं तीन प्रहराहून अधिक अमावास्येची व्याप्ति असेल तर अमावास्यपेक्षां प्रतिपदा अधिक असल्यास लक्ष्मीपूजनादिक दुसऱ्या दिवशींच करावें, असें सागितलें आहे. या मतानें, दोन्ही दिवस प्रदोषकालीं व्याप्ति नसली तरी दुसऱ्या दिवशीं साडेतीन प्रहरांहून अधिक अमावास्येची व्याप्ति असते ह्मणून दुसऱ्या दिवसाचीच घ्यावी हैं युक्त आहे असें वाटतें. चतुर्दशी पासून तीन दिवसांना दीपावली अशी संज्ञा आहे. यापैकीं ज्या दिवशीं स्वातीनक्षत्राचा योग असेल तो दिवस जास्त प्रशस्त होय. या अमावास्येचेच दिवशीं मध्यरात्री- नंतर नगरांतील स्त्रियांनी आपल्या गृहाच्या अंगणांतून अलक्ष्मीला बाहेर घालवावी. To welcome the Goddess, devotees clean their houses, decorate them with finery and lights, and prepare sweet treats and delicacies as offerings. Devotees believe the happier Lakshmi is with the visit, the more she blesses the family with health and wealth.The third day of Diwali is believed to be the most auspicious day; this is when Lakshmi Puja, or the worship of the goddess of wealth is performed. With pomp and ceremony, Lakshmi is invited into the homes of devotees to partake of the gifts that are part of the puja.pujas are offered to Lakshmi, and to one or more additional deities depending on the region of India; typically Ganesha, Saraswati, and Kubera.Lakshmi symbolises wealth and prosperity, and her blessings are invoked for a good year ahead.
